Nagabanoishimochiso of Toyoake

A protected-area featuring a very rare species of insect-eating plant native to this area.
Nagabanoishimochiso is an annual insectivorous plant of the sundew family which grows in a marshy ground. It secretes a sweet smelling mucus from thin hairs which are on the surface and edge of its leaves. It catches and digests insects for nourishment.

Small, pinkish-red flowers gradually bloom upward from its lower parts.

Each flower has five petals, and there are two colors. One is red, the other is white. The Nagabanoishimochiso of Toyoake with red flowers is very rare species in Japan. Every August, this area is opened to the public for a few days during blossom time.

Designated as an object of nature under prefectural protection in 1968
